MODIMAKES
ModiMakes is a Seattle based, born, and raised painter, illustrator, designer, digital artist, cinematographer, and general artist who strives to pursue the abstract corners of his mind to find the beauty that lies within his subconscious imagination. His art is free-flow, that is to say unplanned and directly from his imagination to the page. This, in his words, allows him to “not be limited by my conscious imagination, and instead only be limited by the very depths of my subconscious imagination. As I always find the best results when I surprise myself. So I may start with a very rough idea, or just a head shape, and then allow the piece to create itself as I work on it, like a conversation”.
ModiMakes decided when he was 9 years old that art was going to be his profession, and he has been striving ever since to make that a reality. When he was in highschool he made sure to take advantage of every art and creative class that his school had to offer, studying fine art, graphic design, sculpture, 3d modeling, and many other subjects. After highschool he decided to attend The University of San Francisco where he majored in design with a minor in fine arts and got his first job at The Graphics Center where he created design collateral for the school organizations as well as companies and individuals outside of the school. After graduation he lived in San Francisco for a couple more years working as a graphic designer. In that time he learned that graphic design was not the right route for him and decided to return to Seattle to try and get his art career off the ground in the city he feels most at home.
After his return to Seattle he set about trying to figure out his unique style for his independent work while also working as a digital artist for a custom artwork company in the SODO area. During the quarantine lockdown Modi decided to take his final step to realizing his dreams and left the company to pursue independent art full time and now creates completely unique paintings in a style heavily inspired by street art with a healthy dose of pop art and cubism. To achieve this street art aesthetic he creates his paintings using street art supplies: spray paint, acrylic paint markers, and brushwork where needed. Using these materials he can achieve a clean, vivid, graphic aesthetic that brings his message, his characters, and his scenery to life in a bold way with high contrast colors and precise, illustrative line art. “My paintings prominently display characters either as a portrait or living in a landscape. These characters are manifestations of extreme versions of different facets of my mind and personality. By diligently painting these creations I am able to have a conversation with these specific parts of me directly while the viewer can apply their ideas to that conversation and gleam a more personal meaning based on their experiences and circumstances.” Beyond just paintings ModiMakes also creates clothing, art content on YouTube, sells his original work at festivals, fairs, shows, and galleries, and works on commissions for people all around the world.
